Information for Patients

1. Appointments and fees

Appointments for sessions will be arranged with your therapist for the same day(s), at the same time(s) each week, for 50 minutes and for a fee, as agreed by both therapist and patient. It is common practice for psychoanalytic psychotherapists to charge their regular fee for all sessions regardless of whether the patient actually attends the session or not, with or without notice. This practice is based on the understanding that it is the therapist’s responsibility to keep open the agreed appointment times for the patient for the duration of the therapy and it is the patient’s responsibility to pay for the time reserved for him/her. Fees are usually reviewed annually and can be discussed at any time.

2. The limits of confidentiality

Psychotherapists provide a confidential setting for therapy. Information disclosed in the therapy remains strictly confidential to the therapeutic relationship except in the following circumstances:

  • Information will never be disclosed to others outside the therapeutic setting without the patient’s knowledge and/or consent except in rare legal circumstances or if there is a serious risk of actual harm to the patient or others.

  • Psychoanalytic psychotherapists are obliged by their Codes of Ethics to preserve high standards of practice. Effective and improving standards of clinical practice require therapists to receive periodic supervision of their clinical work and keep up to date with developments in their field. Of necessity this requires the therapist to describe their work with their patients and this is done in a respectful way, without compromising the patient’s right to privacy.

  • Every therapist entrusts the contact details of their patients with a professional colleague so that if they become incapacitated, for whatever reason, their patients can be informed and professional help made available to make alternative arrangements if/as appropriate.

3. Good Practice

Every therapist in APEL practices according to the Code of Ethics and Practice of their Professional Organisation (as listed below) and this includes a Complaints Procedure
