APEL is a group of professional psychoanalytical
psychotherapists from various training backgrounds who are all registered in the
psychoanalytical psycho-dynamic section of The United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) or The
British Psychoanalytical Council (BPC). The Association was formed in
1988 to provide a locally identifiable point of contact to referrers and
individuals looking for therapy. All members are bound by the ethical codes of
their training institutes, which ensure that patients' confidentiality is
preserved and individual autonomy respected.
There are four kinds of help available from APEL:
-
Initial Consultation/Assessment: designed to match
patients with appropriate help from the right people (including referring to
other agencies or practitioners if considered appropriate.) This assessment,
which lasts for 1½ hours, and sometimes with a 50 minute follow up
appointment, may be all that some people need. The normal fee is £55 for the
first appointment and £45 for the second. Assessments are usually arranged
within three weeks of initial contact and ongoing treatment within 6 weeks of
initial contact.
-
An Extended Assessment for up to 6 weekly sessions
which is designed to be a total treatment for some people, and an introduction
to longer in-depth work for others. The normal fee depends on the
circumstances of the patient but is usually set between £35 and £45 per
session. All APEL therapists keep a space for lower fee paying patients. Each session lasts for 50 minutes.
-
Longer term psychoanalytic psychotherapy for those for
whom it is suitable, with the regularity of sessions ranging from one a week
to four a week
-
The APEL Charitable Trust
The APEL Charitable Trust enables APEL to ensure that private treatment is
available to those who can benefit from it regardless of their capacity to pay
for it (while there are sufficient funds available each year). The Trust makes
grants to individuals for one year to help with the cost of therapy.
Successful applicants will have had an initial consultation with an APEL
therapist to see if they meet the clinical criteria which indicate that
therapy would be helpful. They must live in the post-code areas 'E' or 'EC' or
in West or South-West Essex. When the Trust is not able to help, advice can be
given about other organisations in East London and Essex which may be in a
position to help instead.
